I am inclined to pursue getting the MediaWiki instance upgraded and configured the way we want. The only complaint that I am aware of for MediaWiki is that folks were unable to upload files. But of course MediaWiki DOES support that, it is just (according to the FAQ) disabled by default. Some issues: 1) It makes it look like 1.8 continues indefinitely, while the current maintenance branch, 2.1, is ending when 2.4 comes out 2) Maintenance/Feature Release terminology has confused many people 3) Showing 2.4.0 only on the "feature release" branch leads to problems that we have already seen, where folks think that they should avoid it and target the 2.4.1 release three months later instead. I don't think we want to convey that idea. I think that we want to visually represent 2.4.0 more of a target for people to use. See my attached sketch. I think that we can drop 1.8 line from the roadmap altogether. It would suffice to have a bullet point on another slide that mentions 1.8's status as "ad-hoc only releases". Perhaps trying to put the new feature developments on the same slide that shows all of the development streams is too busy. Maybe we have one slide that is something like my attached "lustre streams" graphic (but cleaned up and with dates added), and then the "Roadmap" slide is a simpler one that shows only master. That is, after all, where all of the features land. Perhaps call the first slide showing all of the streams and versions the "Release Schedule", and the second one with only the major 6-month releases along master and the planned new features the "Feature Roadmap". We are hoping this is the start of a fun conversation on how we can classify and track errors better, and perhaps arrive at some ideas of how to reduce the number of escapes in the future. Also of particular interest is a table that shows the defect density for Lustre 2.1 as compared to the code coverage. It doesn't seem there is a clear coverage relationship to the end defect density - perhaps we need better measures or it starts to indicate some of the historic quality issues couldn't be found just through more complete, in a strictly code coverage manner, testing. I updated the Mediawiki instance at wiki.opensfs.org, and things seem to be working ok. But DON'T USE IT YET. It seems to me that the better place for the wiki is to root it at opensfs.org/wiki, and get rid of wiki.opensfs.org (I'd probably put a redirect in place). So here's the situation: if we want something now, Mediawiki will work. If we want Confluence, we're going to need a volunteer to champion that effort: get a license, get a server, do the setup, configuration, and general sysadmin work. Perhaps change opensfs to a virtual private server and admin that (although now I am beginning to see that we can actually do quite a bit within the normal "shared hosting" account that we have on Dreamhost). Putting it under wiki.opensfs.org implies a different computer is involved. With the dreamhost setup, it really is managed under a different username and is treated as a separate web site. I'm of the camp that believes that URLs should be well designed and fairly static. This article explains it a bit: http://www.w3.org/Provider/Style/URI.html But this philosophy includes the idea that URLs should be human readable and not expose the details of implementation. The opensfs foswiki URLs are bad because, for instance: http://www.opensfs.org/foswiki/bin/view/Lustre/CodeCoverage contains the completely useless "foswiki/bin/view/" string. The specific wiki software we use, "foswiki", is a detail users don't need to see, and the "bin" and "view" directories are some detail of foswiki's operation that we should be hiding. If URL was: http://opensfs.org/wiki/Lustre/CodeCoverage Then that URL would likely remain good for many years. Anyone could register on the wiki regardless of affiliation and anyone registered could add/remove content. We need to allow the wiki to be moderated before updates get posted. There were also issues with uploading files (ie they weren't enabled). First, those issues are just configuration details, not fundamental problems with either Mediawiki or our service level at Dreamhost. Now more detail: Permissions: Is that REALLY necessary? Our opensfs wiki is nearly entirely unused. You talked about the TWG area on the wiki on a recent call. But that area is just an empty stub, not an actually used area. Why is that? To make the wiki better, I think Nathan and I are of the opinion that we need to lower the bar for contribution. But like I said, Mediawiki is configurable. The main modes are something like: A) Anyone can create/modify pages without an account. Anyone can view pages. B) Anyone who creates an account can create/modify pages. Anyone can view pages. C) Anyone who creates an account, and then someone else authorizes that account can create/modify pages. Anyone can view pages. D) Private wiki. Only those with accounts and authorization can even view the wiki. I selected "B" the first time through configuring it. That will stop the dumber bots from spaming our wiki. I think it would be reasonable to wait until people actually start causing problems, or we get bots that are auto-creating accounts on our site and spamming us (although we might also look into captcha to help avoid bots). But if people are really paranoid, I suppose C would work, and I would just try to authorize all new accounts from recognized names and/or organizations as soon as possible. Uploads: I turned them on. Max file size increased to 64MB. That can be changed if needed. Chris From morrone2 at llnl.gov Wed Nov 7 21:43:10 2012 From: morrone2 at llnl.gov (Christopher J. With the clean URL design that I want for the wiki that are implementation-agnostic, we could even transition to another wiki package at some future date. I see that there are content translators for Confluence, for instance, that will populate a Confluence instance from a MediaWiki instance. The translation isn't perfect, of course, but the bulk of the content would, I presume, all copy over and appear at the same URLs. I'm working on an agenda and word is getting out so I've had some inquiries about it. I apologize for the very late notice. Please consider if you have anyone from your organizations who will be attending SC12 and could do a brief presentation about an interesting Lustre topic. I'd like the BOF to be community driven. We discussed it on the CDWG call this morning and had an idea to include a talk about testing. In particular, to talk about the efforts spinning up around 2.4. Eric Barton has volunteered to give a Fast Forward update. We could also include a hardware vendor talk or two. Andreas Dilger has offered to talk about future Lustre features. I understand this is very late notice and I apologize for that but as this is an "unofficial" BOF, I think we can keep it informal. Are you volunteering ORNL man power to work on this? If so, in what time frame can you have the evaluation done? The setup done? So this is a manpower issue at heart if Confluence is a hosted service? You anticipate this requiring more effort than MediaWiki because it is setting up a new service or is it the ongoing care/feeding of the system the issue? We could look into getting some IT resources at ORNL to help with this but I do wonder if we are getting close to the point that it would make sense for OpenSFS to have a part-time sysadmin for these types of activities. Not sure if the total level of admin effort expended at this point warrants this, do you have a sense for the amount of volunteer time goes into these types of things today? I wasn't aware that we have an OpenSFS github instance. Can you send me the details off list? Yes, we had that discussion, and my recollection is that we decided against OpenSFS becoming a general project hosting service. As you say, there are many hosting services out there. The github details are short, and I think keeping the conversation open is worthwhile. Ryan Weiss grabbed the "opensfs" organization name for us on github on Jun 23, 2010. I have admin rights on the account should we need to use it. URL is: https://github.com/opensfs This is a free (as in money) account at this time, and can only host fully-public projects. Those of us actively involved in OpenSFS have full-time jobs. Whatever services OpenSFS wants to offer must remain as low overhead as possible. I can say as Chris' manager that he doesn't have time to evaluate Confluence/JIRA and what it would take for OpenSFS to use a hosted instance of it. Based on our experience here at Livermore Computing with bringing up Confluence/JIRA, I expect even a hosted instance is going to require some amount of care and feeding. Here's an explanation, as I understand it: OPS1201-OPENseas-r2.png - front page of www.opensfs.org OPS1201-subpage-r1.png - www.opensfs.org page template OPS1201-lustre-1.png - lustre.opensfs.org page template So the front page of www.opensfs.org is the flashy page to entice folks to opensfs. That front page png mock-up is multiple slides in one graphic. When it is implemented on the web page, there will be some click or scroll mechanism that will allow flipping between the slides. Then all other pages at www.opensfs.org will follow a more general template, OPS1201-subpage-r1.png. Lustre, as an open-source project that has users and community broader than OpenSFS, will have its own lustre.opensfs.org domain, and a similiar, but different template. While we want it to be inclusive, and not make people feel like our lustre pages are only for OpenSFS members, we do want to make clear the effort that OpenSFS puts into the project and encourage those who have similar interests to join OpenSFS, so there is an OpenSFS footer at the bottom of all of the lustre pages to maintain some tie-in. It seems there are ideas for improvements to Lustre which can be characterized as small discrete items/tasks. Instead of, or in addition to, putting out an RFP which is large in scope, how about RFPs for these small discrete items/tasks? Presumably, these could be executed much more quickly than trying to prioritize a longer list of items and drafting the subsequent more complicated Statement of Work. The SOW for a single item would certainly be easier to write. I'll plan to join in on your TWG meeting in Salt Lake. I decided not to pursue making the MediaWiki instance appear under opensfs.org/wiki, and instead just leave it at wiki.opensfs.org. Our web sites, which run on Wordpress, are likely to be changing hosting locations quite soon. While it is probably technically possible to keep everything in the same namespace, it will be prohibitively difficult for me to do. The account creation process now requires approval, and only folks with accounts can create or change wiki pages. I added the opensfs logo to the wiki, and enabled a couple of Mediawiki extensions to make things a bit nicer. I started a page to begin documenting OpenSFS's various infrastructure bits, wiki, web hosting, etc. at http://wiki.opensfs.org/OpenSFS_Infrastructure. We started this initially with a discussion on TWG, further refined some ideas for our LAD presentation, and have now finally articulated them in a semi-coherent manner here: http://goo.gl/mCtwU Chris Gearing at Intel is also heavily interested in this, and has started turning some of these thoughts into an actual spec, but before I integrate those I'd like to get a little feedback from the community on the high-level concepts. I'd also like to hear back from others that are interested in the topic (and hopefully willing to work on it) so we can put together a special-interest list for discussion. I've given everyone comment rights and Chris and Roman edit rights for this doc - if anyone else wants to be an editor, let me know. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Thanks for sending out the link to http://www.opensfs.org/events/super-computing-2012. If the presenters have slides, I'd suggest we link them in there. Maybe it would be best if presenters added PDFs to wiki.opensfs.org. Then who can update the www.opensfs.org page to link them in? Landings ======== -A number of landings made - see http://git.whamcloud.com/?p=fs/lustre-release.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/master -The most significant of these is arguably the latest change under LU-1606 because it resolved the build breakage for e2fsprogs Testing ======= -Testing on the 2.3.54 tag completed; testing on 2.3.56 tag is underway -Dedicated testing on the Hyperion cluster is underway against the 2.3.56 tag; testing is continuing over the US long weekend but results will only be analyzed early next week Blockers ======== -Full list available at http://jira.whamcloud.com/secure/IssueNavigator.jspa?mode=hide&requestId=10292 -There have been a number of regular failures since master auto test runs switched from SLES11 SP1 to SLES11 SP2 clients; there are candidate fixes for these being tracked under LU-2273/2181/1783 Other ===== -ZFS testing is being done in parallel with ldiskfs testing for all uploads into gerrit but only the latter affects the ability to land while configuration issues are being worked through with the former -The master branch is open for feature landings.
