They also sent thanks to the CDWG for the time spent working on the plan. Some of the topics discussed on the call were: * Web site re-do - Progress continues on the web site redo with Pam and Chris Morrone working with LoudDog on the effort. LoudDog created a survey for OpenSFS folks to complete to help with their design. Pam will forward the survey link to those on the call who expressed interest in participating. Other CDWG members will be enlisted to help when we are at the mock-up review stage. * Lustre Community Roadmap update - After the discussion on the Aug 29th CDWG call, Peter Jones updated the roadmap, see: (http://wiki.whamcloud.com/display/PUB/Community+Lustre+Roadmap) - There will be another refresh ahead of SC12 ACTION: Pam will ask Terri Quinn to follow up with the board and make sure that any talks at SC12 include the current Community roadmap. It's important for everyone in OpenSFS to be on the same page with regard to the roadmap and not be sending mixed messages. * Peter requested that people use the CDWG to ask questions about responses to JIRA tickets, etc. It's very important for people to use this community forum to speak up if they feel something is not getting enough attention. * Redo of the Lustre Development Community Tree Maintenance contract was discussed. - Proposed changes so far include: o Increasing to five days when the quarterly report is due after end of quarter. o Generally, a lot of the meat is intended to be documented on the OpenSFS wiki with links in the contract pointing to where to find the references. The CDWG will be responsible for facilitating any changes to these references. This will allow us to make changes even minor ones to the references without having to do a contract modification. o Increase scope of testing - Process for setting priorities should be handled by the CDWG - LLNL's Synthetic WorkLoad (SWL) test has proved a very valuable testing tool in the Hyperion environment. LLNL needs to get it reviewed and released so we can share it more freely. It does need some work to make it more general. Maybe, OpenSFS could help fund this effort? - Quality metrics need to be codified and documented on the OpenSFS wiki (this contract would then reference the metrics) - Same goes for release criteria and metrics o The Lustre Maintenance Release Plan will be added as a reference to the contract. o The process for third-party contributions to Lustre is documented in the contract with a link to additional information (e.g. Best Practices, etc) on the wiki. Firstly I wanted to emphasize the role OpenSFS played in the 2.3 release – in addition to the much-appreciated co-sponsoring of the costs of creating this release (which are quite substantial considering the number of individuals involved over the six months+ taken to complete the release) there is also input from the CDWG. The CDWG is ably run by Pam Hamilton of LLNL and – while it is open to anyone to participate – the most regular and active participants throughout the 2.3 release cycle were from Cray, LLNL, ORNL, Whamcloud/Intel and Xyratex. Furthermore, I wanted to draw attention to the diversity of development organizations who made code contributions to the 2.3 release – Bull, CEA, Cray, DDN, EMC, Fujitsu, LLNL, ORNL, TACC, Ultrascale, UVT, Whamcloud/Intel and Xyratex. I think that this is another positive side-effect of the switch we made to the contribution model at the beginning of last year - in addition to ensuring that it would be impossible for any one organization to alter the license under which Lustre is distributed, I think that it also removes the complexity associated with contributing code (no complicated forms full of legalese to sign) and so encourages contributions. Finally I wanted to spotlight the ongoing benefit from our usage of the LLNL-hosted Hyperion test cluster – this enables us to test at scales that would not otherwise be available to us and so is invaluable for us to ensure that the Lustre releases will hold up at the kind of scale it is exposed to in production. Hyperion was having infrastructure upgrades throughout the 2.3 release cycle and yet the administrators continued to be very accommodating in giving us access to perform release testing. This benefit was increased because LLNL gave us permission to use their Simulated Workload (SWL) test suite during our Hyperion testing and this uncovered a number of issues not seen in other testing (even at scale). So, on behalf of Whamcloud/Intel and indeed the whole Lustre community I would like to warmly thank OpenSFS, the CDWG, the Hyperion administrators and everyone who contributed towards this release. Turning to Lustre 2.4, a number of landings have been made to master while 2.3 was in release testing – these include the remaining changes necessary to allow Lustre to optionally run on top of ZFS. I liked all of the proposals, so I didn't write back sooner. However, it occurs to me nowthat the "Open Seas" theme _may_ be a little too close to Whamcloud's Chroma theme. Obviously the Chroma theme would make even more sense with the "Open Seas" OpenSFS theme, but the diver overlap could lead to some confusion from the layperson's perspective. Maybe Intel/Whamcloud doesn't want that overlap, maybe they do. Have they chimed in? BTW, I like the "drive" theme the best, even if it is a little dark.
