I think this is key.  30k creates/sec on a 5400 rpm spindle, or on a SSD on some heavy hardware?  It probably makes sense to be pretty flexible here, but we should set some limits (i.e. probably not any custom silicon).  Maybe do that by setting a price cap on the hardware?
